Key Points: Pieces 42 & 43

  • Piece 42 is about slurs - playing more than one note to the bow. Use the examples in the video to practise slurring before playing the piece. You will want to play each note separately at first until you find yourself playing pairs of notes.

  • Piece 43 is tricky because it has lots more slurs.  You will need to do a RETAKE in bar 2 and bar 8.

  • In Piece 42 is a bit deceiving. You have what is called a 'counter-melody' - it's not the tune. The piece only makes sense when you play the duet because the tune is in the other part.

  • Piece 43 has some repeats in it so be sure to work out where you go to.

Remember:

  • As always start by doing a bowhold check, do a whole bow warm up, playing the scale of D major and G major. This is so easy to do and really helps you check your tuning.

  • To get going pluck through each piece once or twice.

  • Then try with the bow the Student's Track until you feel confident to move on to the duets.

  • Go from plucking to bowing and back to plucking until you are confidently bowing each piece.

  • Don't be in any rush to 'get it right straight away' - being patient will pay off in the long run.

  • Go over previous videos if you think something's not right.

  • Most 'horrible' sounds occur because of a tense right hand causing the bow to 'tremble,' 'bounce' or be 'scratchy'.

TIP:

Is your bow going adrift? Is it staying just an inch from the bridge or is it travelling down the fingerboard. You might not be holding your violin level and on your shoulder. Check out Lesson 7 to remind you about how to position it properly on your shoulder. If you bow is travelling towards the bridge and may be even over your left shoulder then check out Lesson 8 for a reminder about your bow hold.
