Key Points: Pieces 85 & 86
-
Piece 85 provides you with extra opportunities to practise 2nd finger back. Notice if it sounds out-of-tune because if it does your 2nd finger probably isn't quite far enough back.
-
Piece 86 has plaintive quality to it so think about how you want to perform this once you've mastered the notes.
-
Piece 85 can be played both slowly (and somewhat sadly) and quickly (and up-beat) so use these two characterisations of the piece as reasons to try the piece out in the two different styles. Put in the printed dynamics but also try your own as well to try to express something different.
-
Piece 86 has plenty of rests (minim rests) in it. We often in music have to spend time waiting out turn to come in. To be certain we are coming in at the right moment we have to count beats, in this case crotchet beats. At the beginning the minim rest requires us to count 1, 2 before coming in. Then having played our first few notes we cound 3, 4, 1, 2 before we play once more. Avoid cutting the rests as you practise because you may have difficulties with the duet.

TIP:
Scales: The 2 Octave scale below piece 85 has 2nd fingers in different places depending on which string you are on. On the G string and D string the 2nd fingers are in STANDARD position but on the A string and the E string they are back away from you sitting right next to your 1st finger. Add this 2 octave scale to your warm up.
